Breaking Walls director/founder, Fran Tarr is pleased to share that the Dwyer Cultural Center in partnership with Breaking Walls has a wonderfully artistic and educational opportunity for your student — Breaking Walls Harlem!
The Dwyer Cultural Center (DCC) is a development of International Communications Association (ICA), a 501c3 non-profit organization. ICA introduces cultural and educational programs to the local and global community. The Dwyer is dedicated to the history and traditions of Harlem, offering visual art exhibitions, live music and theatre performances, workshops, arts education programming, public forums, Film screenings, spoken word and celebrations of all kinds for intergenerational and diverse audiences.
Breaking Walls is an international youth empowerment movement that focuses teen minds on identity, values, and empathy, guiding them to explore significant, current issues in their lives. This leads to validation and respect for themselves and others. Breaking Walls initially focused on youth in Brooklyn and Bethlehem. Since our 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 programs in Berlin, Cape Town, Barcelona, Detroit, Warsaw and Santiago we have become an inclusive, global, creative initiative where young people write, perform and share face-to-face dialogue. Breaking Walls 2019 Tangier Summit happens from July 1 to July 15. Starting on February 5, 2019. Breaking Walls Harlem will launch at the Dwyer Cultural Center. The complete calendar is below.
Participating young people are expected to attend all Workshop sessions, as well as perform their original writing for a live audience on April 27th. Each participant will become a part of the Breaking Walls global family. In addition, each participant will receive a metro card (when applicable); a nutritious snack during each Workshop session; and, is eligible to earn a Letter of Participation. Every participant who earns a Letter of Participation will receive a $200.00 stipend after the performance on April 27.
Each artist will be encouraged to apply to join Breaking Walls 2019 Tangier this July. After careful review, one Breaking Walls’ Harlem artist will be invited to join this extraordinary experience. Breaking Walls will cover all expenses of the Harlem artist with the exception of their personal spending money.
