Breaking Walls 2018 Santiago Day of Community Service by Brooklyn Ambassador Naya Mason

In life, most people strive to make their mark in the world. They wish to be a legend, to be remembered. To have a legacy. Breaking Walls has had a chance to make its own mark in Santiago. To show the community that we support peace and acceptance, we have created a beautiful mural on Centro de Recoleta. We were divided into two groups, so that everyone could have a chance to help paint the mural. I must admit, some of us were scared of climbing the ladder to get to the mural. However, in the long run it just became another opportunity to show each other support in more ways than one. When we all reached the top, we already had an outline designed for us, and each of us took turns filling in a section of the outline using spray paint. The captured art shows three different individuals represented together in peace and harmony. Each artist and ambassador that wished to participate collaborated to create the mural with the guidance of its designer. We each had a chance to make our own mark. The reason why I believe it is so beautiful and powerful is because the neighborhood facing it, would finally have something positive to look at from their windows. Before we created the mural, all there was to see was concrete; believe it or not, your environment impacts your thinking and motivation. The people of Santiago deserve a reminder that there will always be people that will never give up on peace. There will always be people that want to show the world that we are all connected and we should love and support one another. I am honored to say that I participated in the creation of a beautiful and powerful reminder that will last for a long time; I will be honored to create many more in the future with Breaking Walls. We speak through our writing, our dancing and our words, but we can speak through a little color as well. I cannot wait to see what we create next year! Stay tuned!
