Breaking Walls 2018 Santiago Summit Goals by Brooklym Ambassador Naya Mason

In life, we often create barriers between ourselves and others based on conflicting ideas or opinions. Considering this, Breaking Walls certainly stands by its name. On the second day of the summit, the adult team and ambassadors had “Training Day,” where we constructed a goal based off of our main theme: “Speak our Truth.” In Santiago Chile, 2018, Breaking Walls established the goal for this year as the development of acceptance of other opinions, and to not let it influence the definition of who you may be. Through this goal, the artists will learn to have an open mind and to think carefully when it comes to judgement and evaluation of others. This prepares them as future leaders with the ability to take outside ideas and opinions into account, without sacrificing their own morals or values. In this meeting we also discussed the creative writing prompts and discovered a way of combining most of the choices to produce stimulating and open writing triggers. This year we are introducing music to the writing workshops to enhance and improve writing flow for the artists.
By Monday night July 9th, all of the artists will produce writing pieces that represent their ideas on three themes for this year: “The Thirst for Truth – Words Matter,” “I Have the Right to Be Myself” and finally (my personal favorite), “My Dear Global Brothers and Sisters.” These essential ideas present the opportunity for the young artists to shed light on the topics, and express their views on it, as well as create the change they wish to see in the world. As an individual who has been an artist for a few years, I believe that this summit will be very successful and develop more leaders of tomorrow.
In the next blog, I will share the writing triggers used as well as some words from a couple of Breaking Walls artists.
