Adina Taubman, Director of Creative Activism

Barcelona artist, Maria reflects on the impact Adina’s Creative Activist Lab program creates.

Dear Adina,

As Breaking Walls artists, every year’s Summit appears to us as a unique opportunity to learn great new things about the world and its different cultures but also about ourselves. Life during and after the COVID pandemic has been rough. As a shared global experience, we all lived these past three years with uncertainty and in a constant learning process. We had to adapt to the challenges that the unknown presented us with. All through this difficult process, full of ups and downs, we were accompanied by our Breaking Walls family. Everyone put their effort into making the Virtual 2020 and 2021 Summits possible and allowed for an in-person 2022 Yerevan Summit, too. Looking forward to the Palermo 2023 Summit makes us, as Breaking Walls brothers and sisters, reflect on all the way we have come since March 2020. And, how all through the Summits we have been able to grow as strong and enlightened youth with a passion for art and commitment towards our local and global communities. This is especially enhanced by your work, Adina, with the Creative Activist Lab from 2020 to 2022, and very soon into your 2023 Lab!
Adina, your Creative Activist Lab makes growing out of the preconceived limits we have about ourselves and others look easy. Your creative vision of art and life becomes something very inspiring to everyone who participates in your Creative Activist Lab. By providing a new way of conceiving the creative process – with a focus on the life of different activists that contribute to the community or by encouraging us to become one ourselves – a new horizon for action appears for us. Given the context of the different years, the meaning of your Lab has developed through each Summit.
During the 2020 and 2021 Virtual Summits, we came from a place in which we were confined to the limits of our house and needed to learn how to cohabit with ourselves – with everything this entailed individually and socially. Thus, being granted the opportunity to develop a creative activism campaign on the issues affecting our community or getting to know an activist one to one, was extremely meaningful. Getting to create from such an isolated place with the purpose of improving our surroundings collectively felt like a light in the dark. Your vision taught us to touch the strength within ourselves and how powerful we are when together.
The 2022 Yerevan Summit had a totally different connotation. Having overcome isolation and being able to physically be with each other again enabled us to establish connections at a whole new level. This time through your creative process, we could explore a new level of depth when understanding the life of others and getting inspired by their work. Your idea for us to interview and interpret the life and words of an activist who contributes to their community was perfect in showing us the scope of creativity in everyone’s core. Getting to know ourselves is easy when we are able to take part in your Creative Activist Lab, not only as artists but as committed youth and creative activists.
We are very thankful for the source of inspiration and knowledge that your Creative Activist Lab gives us. Your passion expands our limits when taking action and developing projects, and has an impact in every aspect of our lives – from the artistic side to the person we want to become every day and in our futures. Thank you. dear Adina!

With love and respect,

Maria and your entire Breaking Walls global family

MY EXPERIENCE WITH BREAKING WALLS 2022

My experience at Breaking Walls 2002 Cape Town was amazing. If I could do it all over again, I would without hesitation. When I heard that I was chosen to represent Rainbow Dreams Trust at Breaking Walls, I was so shocked and excited. I was already looking forward to it.

On that Wednesday, I was so nervous to go there and meet new people. Then I saw there was no need to be nervous because my peers were so chilled and nice, and they loved me. They made me feel welcome.

So I thought since they are so free to be themselves and me – I should also be true to be to them and myself by being myself and not pretending to be someone else.

When I saw Mama D from Rainbow Dreams I was so happy. Fran – she is so funny, loving, diplomatic, and self-assured that she inspired me. I felt so loved and welcomed by everyone, and feel Breaking Walls brought us together and boosted our confidence to perform in front of an audience.

The experience at Breaking Walls has been like no other. From strangers to family. My perspective on EVERYTHING has changed during that 5-day camp. I connected with the other artists and that was the entire point of the camp. To bring diverse children/teenagers together. During the camp, we put aside our differences. There was no “she’s better” or “he’s better”. No favoritism. We were all treated fairly and equally. The directors made sure to give us the time of our lives there and I can’t thank them enough.

The writing all the way to the performance was phenomenal/extraordinary. Never in my 15 years of living would I have thought that I could write such a fine piece of art. Writing has always been there for me but on this camp my inner artist released herself. I personally think that no one there expected to write such amazing words, words that they wouldn’t even think of saying. The way our voices were heard is unbelievable. I was in utter shock when my fellow bestie, Fran, handed us our scripts. Each person had their own story to tell and I think that was the beauty of it all. That we all got a chance to express how we felt so the world could hear us.

Tons of the activities were challenging, many emotional and mentally draining. We did a “burn”. A ritual that has been going down for years. It opened up our hearts. The raw emotion throughout this life-changing event made me realize that you aren’t alone. Someone out there knows exactly what you are feeling, but just doesn’t know it yet. This activity united us all, in every way possible. Thank you to Captain Danny for suggesting it. Without that activity, I don’t think I and the other artists would’ve been this close today.

To my other artists. The first day that we arrived at camp, I actually had no idea that we would grow a close bond like this. You guys changed me as a human being. You made me realize that life is worth living for and that we are all the same. No matter skin color, background, or race. None of that, we’re all the same in our own perfect way. So thank you for being like a family to me. Thanks to Fran, Danny, Fran, OJ, Andrea, and all the other Director Team who helped. Breaking Walls really did BREAK WALLS!

Orran Children’s Center’s mission is to divert vulnerable children from the streets and engage them in academic, extracurricular, and cultural activities. During Breaking Walls 2022 Summit in Yerevan, artists, ambassadors, and Director Team members teamed up to bring a Breaking Walls workshop to the young and amazing kids from the Center. The workshop ended with both an incredible mural still present on the walls of the Center’s courtyard and presentations by groups of Breaking Walls participants and Orran young people according to the quote “Some people put up walls not to keep others out, but to see who cares enough to break them down”.

Many difficulties were faced, the language barrier being what could have been the most difficult to address. But as soon as the workshop was ongoing, thanks to the help of our Yerevan artists and to the effort of the other artists, ambassadors, and Director Team, language became a new wall that was broken down. All around kids and adults were playing, singing, and writing together and bonds were formed without any struggle.

Now in our memories, and in the walls of Orran Children’s Center remain colorful and bright images of a day in which our family once again grew in number and in which it was shown that no matter the age, the language, or any other form of identity, art is a tool ready for everybody to use in any form and to let their voices be heard as loud as they are willing to give.

Once again Breaking Walls has been a home for growth, mindfulness, mutual learning, friendship, and leadership. As an artist from Barcelona who has been part of the program for four years, I have realized that every Summit is a unique experience where the vulnerability of each individual – of every artist – builds up a collective, a connection, and the strength and the hope for a bright future.

It was easy to connect to every artist right from the very beginning. At first, we were warmly received by the Armenian artists who were excited to show us the culture and language of Armenia through the music, dances, and also by talking about the complicated history of their country. This made us feel closer to them as artists and friends but also closer to their culture. Once we started with the creative writings and the ensemble-building activities, we got to know each artist and their background more in-depth from a much more vulnerable place. We built a safe space where everyone was respected and heard and, through this, we were able to get to know each other in a way that wouldn’t be possible outside Breaking Walls.

When our Directors of Theater Performance, Aina Cuesta and Angela Constantinidou, put together the final script with our writings and we started working on the play “The Sound of my Soul”, we were already a family and we found a lot of support in each other during the rehearsals. The final show was a very emotional moment for all of us; the artists, directors, ambassadors, and the audience. We were surprised to hear how the connections within the group were felt by the audience in our monologues and some of them doubted if we had really only known each other for two weeks!

However, we also connected with each other and had fun during our other activities of cultural exploration like the visits to the different museums or the walks around the different cities and the Sevan Lake, which were very enriching. We had a wonderful tour organized by Arpi Maghakyan and Sona Bianjyan, the Director of Cultural Exploration and an artist from the Armenian delegation, around the city of Yerevan. We got to sing Karaoke all together, dance to Armenian traditional songs, and learn the Armenian folk dance. We prepared traditional Armenian food like the lavash bread or the Armenian Tolma – which was delicious. Nevertheless, one of the most special activities at the Summit was the night we had dinner at the Armenian artists’ homes. They were very kind and welcoming and prepared traditional and delicious food for us. This made us feel part of the Armenian culture and we learned many things about the differences and similarities that bring us all together.

On the other hand, the visit to the Orran Children’s Center was very inspiring, too. We spent the day with children from vulnerable families in Yerevan writing and performing our different collective poems and stories and it was a great opportunity to learn how not even language is a barrier to connect. We found that many children didn’t speak much English, however, we realized that we could understand each other through our voices, our art, and through respect for one another. It was great fun and an experience we all will keep very close to our hearts. The feeling of collective understanding also came from the Rainbow Connect Conversation hosted by Dannie Kagan, our Director of Leadership. Every delegation got the opportunity to share a part of their country and their culture with the rest; through music, through stories, and even through food! It was inspiring and fascinating, and we learned a bit more from Morocco, Chile, Poland, Armenia, Spain, South Africa, the United States, and Germany.

During the Summit, we also took different workshops to develop our leadership skills. Throughout the two weeks, we worked with Condola Rashad, a multi-talented artist, and actress who was, too, our Mindfulness Mentor. In her online sessions, we got a chance to watch how we felt and to be in the present which opened us to new spaces not just for creativity but also for self-knowledge and learning about our inner voice. Jessie Fullenkamp, our Health & Wellness Ambassador, also helped us reflect upon ourselves and our identities to embrace them and others and become the outspoken artists and leaders that the world needs. Moreover, Adina Taubman, who was our Director of Creative Activism, taught us how everything can be transformed into something creative and the power that lies in words. With her, we transformed the exact transcripts of interviews that we had done with different inspiring activists into short plays that showed this person’s life and work. It was really interesting to see how every play interpreted the interview’s transcript differently with a lot of creativity even using the same words that the interviewee used.

So, to sum up, the three words that I would use to describe this Summit would definitely be connect, create, and change. We did not only connect to others and their cultures and their backgrounds,… we connected with ourselves to find our inner voices; we did not only create a poem, a drawing, a song, or a play,… we created bonds, strength, and awareness; so we change, we changed within ourselves to become the leaders of tomorrow and we changed our surroundings by being proof of how the world’s youth can come together in understanding to be the voice against injustice and discrimination.

Last year’s Virtual Artist Cooperative was a bit of an experiment. We did our best to make everything work, but as it was our first virtual experience things were difficult to handle a few times. However, the final result was a complete success and we realized that our adapting abilities were more powerful than we thought.

When we finished the Virtual Artist Cooperative of 2020, we all hoped that this year we would be able to have a Summit as we were used to, but it wasn’t possible… so there we were again, connecting our voices and minds from our houses, in different parts of the world, with different times zones and temperatures, and with our busy schedules. Fortunately, and thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication, things were easier this time. Despite the fact of knowing how great Breaking Walls is and all the people who are part of this organization that I call my global family, it still surprises me the way we share our world visions, how we help each other to grow and shine together, and how we connect, create and change being far away, and, in some cases, without even having met some of our fellows in person.

During this Virtual Cooperative, I wasn’t a Breaking Walls artist, which is what I have been doing since 2018, this time I was a leadership apprentice. It was a big challenge for me. In the Leadership Training Course, Dannie and Christian guided us through a creative journey where we were able to reflect and work on our personal development. We talked about our time management, what we are afraid of, how we face and solve problems, and what we think we can give to Breaking Walls as future ambassadors. I couldn’t be more grateful for having the opportunity to work with so amazing and inspiring people. Every day I ended up feeling so encouraged and wanting to keep sharing with my group, and as usual, it felt like there was never enough time.

Breaking Walls always arrive when I need it the most: when I’m feeling overwhelmed about my academic life, when I’m starting to feel tired and frustrated, or when I’m just not motivated anymore; and this year was no exception. One more time, Breaking Walls appeared to save me. I remembered what matters the most to me and I reconnected with myself. Being part of this global family is always an enriching experience and I will never have enough words to describe how wonderful it is.

Claudia Leiva Pérez

“Hi, I’m Dani and I’ve come to explain my time traveling through this wonderful project Breaking Walls.

“At first, we were all very confused, since we didn’t know what we were going to do. Our dearest Fran explained to us how we were going to work, but she didn’t mention EVERYTHING. The first days we built some very personal texts that helped us to open up with others, made us lose our shame, and we were able to understand the thoughts of our schoolmates.

“Personally, I took the opportunity to say things that I would never say since it was in another language and I felt more comfortable speaking it – knowing that few people would understand everything 100%.

“What surprised me the most, was that we were making our own script without even realizing it. I not only had to recite my writings but also Rapped one piece! And that made me laugh and was very exciting.

Finally, I want to talk about the experience in general. It was AMAZING. We went from not knowing anything to making the audience cry with our performance. It was very emotional and has helped us get along even better with the class group we’ve known for four years as well as Taoufik and Yousef. I think Breaking Walls is something that everyone should do at least once in their life.”

“To say that being a part of Breaking Walls has been life-changing is an understatement. Since I’ve been a part of the Breaking Walls program my life has literally changed mentally, physically, and emotionally. As a black gay male who plans on working in the field of mental health and is currently working in the field of social work, I’m aware of the importance of mental health especially when trying to navigate the various other parts of my identity.

“Breaking Walls is literally the catalyst for me to search for new ways to tackle the challenge of finding ways to deal with mental health because it promotes expression and creativity for people of ALL backgrounds.

“The inclusivity of this program has blessed me with opportunities that I never thought would even be possible as a kid. I wish to see that opportunity be extended to as many young artists as possible as we start our journey towards the 2022 Yerevan Summit.“ Dwayne, Detroit artist

Our tenth anniversary 2022 Summit will bring together 42 young people like Dwayne from Barcelona, Berlin, Bethlehem, Brooklyn, Cape Town, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Detroit, Santiago, Sarajevo, Tanger, Tripoli, and Warsaw to build a bridge with their peers in Yerevan, Armenia.

The 2022 Summit structure demonstrates our vision by utilizing the following elements:
Pen-Page-Stage– participants use creative writing, video, visual, vocal art, and dance to build self-awareness and empathy.
Ensemble-Building/Peacemaking– participants develop a sense of community and mindfulness through their collective performance.
Community Service– participants foster a sense of gratitude through civic and community engagement by volunteering at a local Yerevan youth organization, animal shelter, and environmental organization.
Creative Activist Lab– participants craft “seed” ideas to positively impact home communities by modeling the United National Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
Leadership Training – young artists are encouraged to step into our ambassador leadership roles and provide mentorship to their peers.
Health & Wellness – participants will be involved in facilitated conversations in order to better understand that a healthy child is a whole child and explore the concept of “deep listening”.
Cultural Explorations– participants actively experience Armenia’s rich culture by partaking in trips to local art museums, walking tours, cooking classes, and visual art classes all while creating shared experiences with one another.

From June 28 to July 16, 2022, the individual vulnerability will be transformed into a rich and resilient chorus of equity, truth-telling, and justice as participants evoke artistic principles to share their life experiences with a global community.

Each year the artists and ambassadors of Breaking Walls gather together to share their thoughts, insights, and passion for creating a world based on peace and acceptance. Under the leadership of Cape Town ambassador, Athenkosi, these are woven into our pledge to being living examples of these thoughts.

Living our Words.

The Breaking Walls 2021 Peace & Acceptance Statement
Crafted by the artists and ambassadors from Barcelona, Brooklyn, Cape Town, Detroit, Santiago, Sarajevo, Tangier, and Warsaw.

Breaking Walls is one big happy family in which everyone is connected to the other. Artists, Ambassadors, Directors, and Artistic Mentors share good and sad moments. We respect each other’s ideas and welcome everyone, making them feel wanted. We embrace our differences and actively, deeply listen to one another. We are committed to bettering ourselves for the betterment of our future. As young activists, emerging leaders, and proud members of Breaking Walls. We pledge to strive to make a positive impact on the world no matter what we do. We pledge to listen attentively, act decisively, and respond loudly to the injustices. We pledge to work together in unison with those representing our culture. We have to be open-minded and respect other people’s cultures. We believe we should speak up for those who don’t have a voice. We have to listen like how we would like others to listen when we speak. We believe positive change is not complete if we leave others behind.

+ Discrimination whether by one Ethnicity, religion, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, or social status totally not accepted and is rejected loudly by Breaking Walls. We work to have peace, respect, truth-telling, love, and empathy – celebrating the risk we take to share our voices with others.

+ We promise to love one another no matter what occurs and we rely on ourselves to collectively grow through self-love and preserving Breaking Walls’ core values.

+ Our mission is equity, freedom, truth-telling, unity, and peace in our community and in our inner circle. We hope to develop into leaders that will break generational curses and create limitless and equitable futures for the generation of tomorrow.

+ As young artists and ambassadors, we have a strong voice and responsibility to critically analyze, respect, and improve from what generation before we dealt with issues.

+ We believe as part of self-love is the ability to forgive and see hurt as sometimes an opportunity to grow and develop.

+ We want our world to change for the better and we have ideas on how to achieve that and that is partly through open prejudice-free dialogue, inclusivity, and diversity protection and celebration.

+ Respect for other people’s cultures be open and remove all stereotypes that have been introduced to us by our society.

+ We must promote that everyone expresses their emotion and experiences and engage with the utmost respect.

In 2021 we highlight that as a generation we have a mission to fulfill, and we believe listening deeply and learning to forgive is important in fulfilling our mission. We are confident in our dreams and if we dream too big, the cure is to dream even bigger and sustain hope. In Breaking Walls, we intend to collaborate and unite towards the purpose of Connection, Creation, and Change. We are all Champions and young Creative Activists, yet we are also catalysts for change. For us to bring about meaningful change in so many ways needed we will also need to in some ways continue to transform ourselves. We reaffirm our belief we need to Break So Many Walls around ourselves and allow ourselves to be reachable. We are the future and we all believe we must start that beautiful future today.

Dear Breaking Walls Supporters,

I write from a place of joy truly made by my receiving the Billie Allen Memorial Sponsorship that will enable me to intern at the United Nations. For me, it is by far, literally and figuratively, my biggest opportunity ever. This opportunity is something clearly more than I could ever dream of happening. The United Nation’s history is aligned with my beliefs. It is the place where anyone who wishes to change the world wishes to intern. It is a place that historically has changed the world. The reason we have not had World War III is because of the United Nations. In the dark days of apartheid in South Africa in 1972, it was this very institution that recognized Apartheid as a Crime Against Humanity. From miles away, the United Nations felt our pain, and as early as that year they let us know that they stood with us. I write forty-nine years later about myself having an opportunity to sit in the chamber where such titans sat.

It’s unimaginable what effect this will have on me. As someone who is a law student, I understand the United Nations as the ultimate legislature and ultimate executive and ultimate judiciary. Its laws are a guiding light for all governments and citizens who are party to them. This opportunity will take me to the very institution I admire, where I will serve their values and carry out their mission. In my capacity as a future lawyer, this will do a lot for my career and is influencing me to consider seriously being a Human Rights lawyer.

All I am trying to say is that this institution has had an indirect impact on my life which is significant. I am very grateful from a personal level and in my capacity as a future lawyer.
I never dreamed of an opportunity that affords me to be in contact with so much greatness. Growing up, I never saw myself worthy of such an opportunity. Growing up on the streets of the Phillippi Township, the situation really does not allow for a person to easily dream. Success and great experiences are something so rare that some people feel it is not even worth trying. Rainbow Dreams Trust and Breaking Walls have given me a window to the world and because of that, I have increased the horizon for myself. This is such an amazing story I cherish. A horizon that will see me seeing myself in that world that is better than where I come. Breaking Walls has prepared me for this, my first step I take into the real world.
I am a young man who believes that all forms of discrimination are Illegal and should, in all forms, be abolished. I believe the world is a shared place in which even though we are from different places, we should have mutual concern for others. I believe that borders do no longer hold people from making meaningful life with people miles away. All beliefs beautifully proclaimed by Billie Allen.

I want to thank you for your generosity in giving me such an opportunity. For caring for me. It is something that I can never be able to say thank you enough. Thank you for being concerned, thank you for making me be assured again that there are people who care, and that the caring society I wish to exist, does exist. It just needs to be something that more and more people get involved in promoting. Through this opportunity, I know it is worth pursuing a course of caring and being really concerned.

Interning at the United Nations will take me to another level. A level where I can only grow. Sometimes it’s an opportunity like this that can change one’s life from ordinary to extraordinary. In all of this, I carry my Phillippi community on my shoulders. I represent them and my Breaking Walls, global family. An achievement for me is an achievement for them. It will spark a light in me. I will do my best to make sure I keep this light shining so that the ones who come after me will gain warmth and hope.

Yours sincerely,

Athenkosi Nyembezi
